Movies in Theaters Today Review

Empty movie theater

I’ve always loved going to the movies, so, when after a long break from going (for obvious reasons) my husband asked me to choose the movie I wanted to watch, I was elated.

I read the plot of every movie showing at our local movie theater, but soon my excitement gave way to a deep feeling of grief. What I found astonished me! Why, if most people in America claim to be Christians, many keep paying to watch garbage? America’s morality is broken enough as it is. Why keep fueling the fire?

The Word of God says, ”For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” Movie theaters testify to this truth on the big screen. See what the movies currently showing at your local movie theater are all about. You can read the full reviews at commonsensemedia.org. Rating information is from imdb.com

Before I fall  (PG-13)

This movie has plenty of iffy teen behavior, including partying, sex, verbal and physical bullying, lying, strong language, and sexuality.

Logan (R)

The main issue in this movie is the extremely strong, bloody comic book violence, including characters being sliced through flesh and skulls, shot, shown in pain, and killed. It contains brief nudity, strong language, and alcoholism.

The Shack (PG-13)

This movie portrays the Holy Trinity as an African American lady who loves to cookrepresenting Jehova; a Middle-Eastern carpenterrepresenting the Lord Jesus, and an Asian lady who likes to gardenrepresenting the Holy Spirit. Blasphemous! Do I need to say more?

Get Out (R)

Violence isn’t constant in this movie, but is really brutal when it happens, with fighting, bashing with blunt objects, kicking, stabbing, guns, shooting, and lots of blood. Language is strong and contains very vivid sex talk.

Fist Fight (R)

This is a very filthy movie, so I refer you to the IMDB.com  to read the “Parents Guide” which describes the most relevant scenes. They’ll shock you! Apart from that, it has intense violence, terrible messages about masculinity, plenty of strong language, pornography and use of drugs.

Fifty Shades Darker (R)

This is a clearly pornographic movie disguised as a romantic movie. It also contains violence and bad language.

John Wick: Chapter Two (R)

This is a very violent thriller (the movie is nonstop gory mayhem). It contains nudity, plenty of swearing and social drinking.

Split (R)

It depicts kidnapping, rape, sexual molestation, and child sexual abuse. It contains violence, sexual references, swearing, social drinking and nudity (Teen girls are seen on the screen stripping off their clothes). It also depicts cannibalism!

Manchester by the sea (R)

Expect constant swearing, discussions about sex among teens,  partial nudity, and excessive drinking.

Moonlight (R)

The scenes in this movie include drug use (crack cocaine and weed), social drinking and strong language. It also portrays sexual activity among teens (both same-sex and opposite-sex).

Charming, isn’t it? Not so in the eyes of God. Romans 1: 28-32  warns us:

“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness…and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also  give hearty approval to those who practice them.” (Please, don’t be one of them).

So, what is the worst thing that could happen to us Christians if we stop watching these kinds of movies? Get bored? I don’t think so. There are still excellent Christian movies that’ll inspire us to trust God, if only we dare to go against the grain. Who knows, maybe, just maybe, we might finally get to be what we are meant to be: Salt of the earth and Light of the world…

…On Jesus, Fitness and Diet

food and sports

A bit disconcerted, someone told me he’d never heard a sermon that teaches Christians how to take care of their bodies and asked me if I had heard a sermon on the subject. I couldn’t remember any sermon or biblical passage that focused in our physique the way he meant it, so I said no. After our talk I set myself the goal to find out what the Bible teaches about it and this is the result. Enjoy what will probably be your very first teaching on Jesus, Fitness and diet.

First and foremost, what does our Creator thinks about health?

Hygiene

It will surprise you, but Jesus wouldn’t freak out about hygiene when it comes to eating. Scrubbing  was not his thing. When the Scribes and Pharisees asked him, “Why don’t your disciples wash their hands before they eat?” He gathered a crowd and told them, “Hear and understand. It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.” Later, when His disciples asked him to explain himself, He replied, “Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

That kind of put things on perspective, isn’t it? Jesus was not against cleanliness of course. In fact, His very purpose was to clean us, not from physical defilement though, but from the spiritual one.

Mealtimes

When it comes to health, having the right amount of food at the right time is essential, isn’t it? Let’s find out Jesus’ eating habits:

Mark 6: 30 tells us “because there were many people coming and going, He and his disciples did not even have time to eat”. Mark 3: 20 says that when He came home, the crowd gathered again, to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal.  We find Jesus feeling hungry in the story of the Samaritan woman, but when His disciples insisted that He should eat he replied, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.” Jesus’ eating habits were so out of whack that when His family knew about it, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, “He has lost His senses!”

So, we see that Jesus was more interested in saving people than in His physical needs, which is not to say that He didn’t care about it. He allowed his disciples to pick heads of grain and eat them on the Sabbath because they were hungry, but for Him food was nothing more than a necessity. He never let the physical realm take preeminence over the spiritual one, and neither should we.

Fasting

Although most health experts are against starving the body, Jesus considered it a healthy habit —spiritually speaking, that is. “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.” Jesus abstained from food for forty days to focus in what really matters: His relationship with God. It is our call to do the same.

Food quality

How about food quality? Was Jesus in the least interested about it? I hate to tell you, but you’ve just finished Part One of a series of 4 and you’ll have to wait untill tomorrow to find out. See you then!
